Reply with quote | #4 | Yes there was a wooden cafe that was also full of bikers. That was a real pain because the main route out of Oldham to the coast before the motorway was Hollinwood/Victoria Ave. the roxy milk bar was where the M60 is now close to where the Roxy used to be. __________________ 2009 is the 50th birthday of the Mini |

Reply with quote | #7 | Around that time there were Milk Bars, they sold milk shakes, very popular then. The thing is, the in places were coffee bars etc, not pubs like today. yeh we did drink but not to excess, except at parties maybe. The Thing club in oldham was a popular club but alchohol was never served, it was never important the music was the thing. __________________ 2009 is the 50th birthday of the Mini |

My folks owned the Roxy Milk Bar circa 1961-64. It was open 7 days a week and was a busy place, only closing at 11 in the evenings. It was a rocker's haunt at night, but I can also remember a few brave mods shuffling sheepishly through the doors. We had a top Wurlitzer juke box which was never silent plus two pin tables which at the age of 10 I was undisputed Milk Bar champion and top points scorer. The original pinball wizard! The rockers christened me The Roxy Milk Bar kid because I wore specs and looked like the kid in the Nestles Milky Bar ads. They called me worse than that when I beat their score. One Saturday night some rival grease gang piled through the door, smashing the place up. My old fellah got stabbed in the back. Happy days eh? |
